UK-based startup Global Airlines is planning to launch Airbus A380 services to the Maldives, making the island nation one of the airline's first destinations.
Industry reports indicate that the carrier is targeting the November–December holiday season to begin operations, with flights expected to be operated using its Airbus A380 aircraft.
Global Airlines had initially planned to launch services to New York and Los Angeles. However, the airline has since shifted its focus, prioritising the Maldives as it prepares to commence commercial operations.
Founder James Asquith said the Maldives remains one of the world's most sought-after holiday destinations and highlighted strong demand for direct air links from the United Kingdom. He said the airline believes there is room for additional direct services between the two countries.
The airline is also seeking to expand its fleet by acquiring another aircraft to support its planned route network.
However, the proposed launch has raised questions within the aviation industry, as Global Airlines has yet to secure its Air Operator Certificate (AOC). The airline has stated that it is exploring alternative regulatory options, including operating under the certification of another European country if necessary.
The United Kingdom is currently the Maldives' third-largest tourism source market. A total of 89,242 visitors from the UK have travelled to the Maldives so far this year.
