The Maldives will fly the national flag at half-mast for one day in honour of former Qatari Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, following a directive issued by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

Under the directive, the Maldivian flag will be flown at half-mast from 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 13, until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14. The decision reflects the longstanding friendship between the Maldives and Qatar and recognises Sheikh Hamad's contributions to the country's development during his reign.

President Dr Muizzu departed for Qatar on Monday morning to attend the official mourning ceremonies following the former Amir's passing. Sheikh Hamad, who died on Sunday at the age of 74, ruled Qatar from 1995 until his abdication in 2013 and is widely credited with transforming the country into a major economic and diplomatic power.

The former Amir also played a significant role in strengthening Maldives-Qatar relations. His contributions to the Maldives included supporting the launch of Qatar Airways operations in the country and the establishment of Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani School in Laamu Gan and Masjid Al Sheikh Qasim Bin Al Thani in Hulhumalé, both of which continue to serve the Maldivian people.
