Outstanding tax payments and other fees owed to the state have increased to nearly MVR 14.5 billion, with unpaid taxes accounting for more than half of the total amount.

Figures released by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) show that total outstanding dues to the state stood at MVR 14.47 billion as of 31 March.

Of this amount, MVR 8.17 billion consists of outstanding tax payments. This includes MVR 3.50 billion in General Goods and Services Tax (GGST), MVR 2.41 billion in Income Tax, MVR 1.57 billion in Tourism Goods and Services Tax (TGST) and MVR 697.65 million in other taxes.

Meanwhile, non-tax dues owed to the state stood at MVR 6.30 billion. This includes MVR 5.97 billion in outstanding resort rent and MVR 331.46 million in other fees.

MIRA said it recovered MVR 2.09 billion in outstanding dues through enforcement measures. The recoveries included MVR 1.29 billion through dunning, MVR 617.54 million through dues clearance, MVR 151.80 million through reminder calls and emails, MVR 13.59 million through bank account freezing measures, and MVR 13.15 million through the name-and-shame policy.

The authority continues to implement enforcement measures to recover outstanding payments and improve compliance with state revenue obligations.
