Velana International Airport --
Velana International Airport (VIA) has installed a state-of-the-art hydrant fuelling system to enhance its fuel storage capacity, marking a significant step forward in the airport’s development as a regional hub.
The new facility, covering 37,000 square metres, triples VIA’s fuel storage, allowing for up to 45 million litres of Jet A-1 fuel, 1 million litres of diesel, and 100,000 litres of petrol. This expansion aligns with the growing demand in global air travel, preparing the airport to handle an increasing volume of passengers and larger aircraft.
The system’s advanced design directly connects the fuel farm to aircraft parking areas via a kilometre-long underground pipeline, reducing the need for fuel trucks and enabling faster, more efficient fueling. This shift decreases emissions, minimises on-site vehicle traffic, and improves safety by lowering the risk of fuel-related incidents and accidents, contributing to a healthier work environment for airport staff.
This project is part of a broader expansion plan at VIA, reinforcing its status as a key destination in South Asian aviation. With the new facility operational, VIA is better positioned to support the Maldives’ booming tourism sector and accommodate larger aircraft, enhancing the airport’s service efficiency and sustainability.
