A new fish species named Plectranthias raki (Maldivian Perchlet or Raki buraki) has been discovered in the Maldives' mesophotic zone at depths between 100-125 metres. The small 5-7.5 centimetre fish, characterised by its orange and white patterns and shy behaviour, appears to be endemic to Maldivian waters. The discovery, published in ZooKeys journal, resulted from a joint expedition by local and international researchers working with the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI).
