President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has praised the launch of the International Zero Carbon Island initiative by Shandong Province, China, recognising it as a significant advancement in the global fight against climate change.
Speaking at the event, held alongside COP29 under the UNFCCC, President Dr Muizzu commended China’s dedication to green development, particularly its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. He described China’s commitment as a model of leadership, inspiring other nations to prioritise climate action.
During his address, President Dr Muizzu stressed that the Maldives, like many vulnerable nations, faces growing climate threats, making low-carbon development an urgent necessity. He emphasised the Maldives' determination to actively pursue sustainability, positioning itself as a leader in environmental protection rather than a passive victim of climate change.
Highlighting the importance of global cooperation, President Dr Muizzu stated that small island nations such as the Maldives play a critical role in shaping a sustainable future. He expressed confidence that the Maldives’ low-carbon policies could serve as a model for other island nations aiming for resilience and sustainability. He urged the COP29 nations to come together to establish a climate finance goal that would foster impactful, unified climate action.
Following the event, President Dr Muizzu held a brief meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, where they explored further avenues for cooperation between the Maldives and China, particularly in areas of green development and climate resilience.
