President Dr Mohamed Muizzu --

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has responded to recent criticism concerning a proposed bill to merge the Maldives Media Council (MMC) and the Maldives Broadcasting Commission.

The bill, introduced by Independent MP Abdul Hannan Aboobakuru, seeks to create a new entity known as the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission. This seven-member commission would consist of four members appointed by the President, with the approval of Parliament, and three members elected by the media.

In a statement on X, President Dr Muizzu clarified his position, stating that controlling newspapers and media is not aligned with his beliefs. He emphasised that as long as the Constitution of the Maldives and Islam are respected, every citizen has the right to exercise their freedom within the sovereign territory of the state.

The President's remarks come in response to concerns raised by some media outlets, who fear the bill could infringe upon press freedom. Minister for Youth Empowerment, Information, and Arts, Ibrahim Waheed (Aswad), also weighed in, noting that the bill represents the personal opinion of the Thulhaadhoo MP and is not necessarily indicative of government policy.

The proposed bill has sparked debate over the future of media regulation in the Maldives, with supporters arguing it could strengthen media governance and promote responsibility. However, critics worry that the bill could lead to increased Government influence over the media landscape.
