The Maldivian Government has collected the biometrics of over 10,000 foreign nationals as part of its ongoing crackdown on undocumented migrants, known as 'Operation Kurangi'.
Minister for Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihsan, announced that the operation is being conducted across 138 islands and is expected to be completed by April 2025.
As part of the initiative, the Government has already shut down businesses run by undocumented migrants and successfully deported around 5,000 individuals from the country.
Minister Ihsan also highlighted the Government's broader efforts to tackle crime, including addressing drug issues, preventing gang violence, protecting children from criminal activity, and reducing prison-related crimes. He emphasised that the issue of undocumented migrants could pose a significant challenge for the nation, and the Government is working on finding a long-term solution.
