President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to develop comprehensive defence capabilities across maritime, land, and aerial domains.

In his Presidential Address at the first session of the People’s Majlis for 2025, President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s independence – a solemn national duty he has embraced and will never neglect.

He underscored his dedication to protecting national sovereignty, pledging to remain vigilant against even the slightest threat to the country’s autonomy.

President Dr Muizzu outlined initiatives to double the MNDF Coast Guard’s capabilities and expand its operations, with the procurement of essential vessels already underway. He also noted significant progress in establishing additional Coast Guard centres.

The President highlighted the Special Boat Squadron, established in November 2024, which is now fully operational and equipped to carry out specialised Coast Guard missions. Additionally, he drew attention to the MNDF Air Corps, formed in March 2024, aimed at strengthening modern military capabilities. He reported that the deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles has already led to the detection of numerous foreign vessels operating illegally in Maldivian waters.

Efforts are ongoing to establish air stations in both the northern and southern Maldives to enhance territorial surveillance. Furthermore, the MNDF Marine Corps will see increased capacity, with the expansion of facilities at the Girifushi Training Centre scheduled for completion this year.

The President also emphasised the critical need to improve MNDF Fire and Rescue services, announcing key initiatives to boost resources and operational capabilities in the coming year.

Reaffirming the Government’s commitment to maintaining law and order, President Dr Muizzu highlighted progress in strengthening the Maldives Police Service. Since November 17, 2023, police stations have been established on 27 islands, with plans to extend services to 39 additional islands this year. Construction will also commence on permanent police stations to replace temporary facilities across 20 islands.

Moreover, the President outlined comprehensive measures to further enhance the Maldives Police Service through the recruitment of additional personnel and the acquisition of new equipment – these efforts will support the Government’s broader strategy to tackle drug-related issues and combat gang violence.
