President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the launch of 134 school infrastructure projects across the Maldives, set to take place throughout this year.
The initiative, revealed in his Presidential Address at the opening session of the People’s Majlis for 2025, aims to enhance learning environments in schools nationwide.
A key highlight is the "Cool School" project, which will see air conditioning installed in over 3,700 classrooms in Government schools by the end of 2025. The project will be powered entirely by solar energy, making it a key step in the country’s sustainability efforts.
President Dr Muizzu also highlighted the construction of new schools this year, supported by Indian concessional finance under the Secondary School Construction Project.
In addition, the President reported that in 2023, the Government provided MVR 1.26 billion in financial assistance to more than 15,300 students pursuing higher education and over 1,000 short-term training opportunities and more than 640 scholarships were also offered to support academic advancement.
The President also announced the establishment of the National Research Grant Fund, with an initial allocation of approximately USD 648,508. The fund will be managed by the newly formed Research Council, which has already begun allocating research grants.
Moreover, to address the ongoing dollar shortage faced by students studying abroad, the President has fulfilled a key pledge by increasing the international card limit to USD 1,200.
