The Government has taken additional steps to decentralise ID card issuance service following concerns expressed by citizens over the difficulties and delays in obtaining ID cards, particularly for those residing outside Male'.
Prior to the expansion of ID card and passport services in November last year, all ID cards were printed in Male' and then sent to the islands, leading to prolonged processing times and inconvenience. Recognising the need for reform, ID card printing services have since been established in various islands, with a target to extend these facilities to all islands by the end of this year.
As part of these efforts, the Department of National Registration (DNR) introduced ID card printing services in three locations within the Greater Male' area on 17 November. These include the Umar Zahir Building in Hulhumale' Phase 1, The second Vinares tower in Hulhumale' Phase 2, and the Villimale' Office Building.
The expansion initially began in the atolls, with ID card printing services launched in September last year at the Gaafu Alif Atoll Council and the Gaafu Alif Villingili Council. Since then, the service has been further extended to Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo and Kulhudhuffushi City.
This year, the DNR has continued its efforts by setting up ID card printing services in seven additional areas. These include Haa Alif Ihavandhoo, Haa Alif Dhidhdhoo, Haa Alif Kelaa, Raa Ungoofaaru, Raa Alifushi, and Noonu Kendhikulhudhoo. Moreover, preparations are underway to establish the service in Haa Dhaalu Makunudhoo, Noonu Manadhoo, and Faafu Nilandhoo.
Government officials have stated that this initiative will significantly ease the process for citizens, as ID cards can now be printed directly at councils where the service has been set up. The long-term goal is to establish ID card printing services in all islands across the Maldives.
In addition to local expansion, the Government is also planning to introduce ID card services abroad. The initiative aims to provide Maldivians residing in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, and the United Kingdom with access to ID card services without the need to travel back to the Maldives.
