President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has revised his nomination for the position of Vice President of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), replacing his initial nominee with another member of the commission.
In his original letter to Parliament on January 26, the President had nominated Ahmed Nashid for the role. However, in a new letter submitted on February 11, he withdrew the nomination and instead proposed Abdulla Nashid.
Both Ahmed Nashid and Abdulla Nashid were appointed as members of the ACC on January 26, following parliamentary approval on January 20. Ahmed Nashid previously served as an assistant commissioner of police and was also a member of the Police Board.
Abdulla Nashid holds a Master’s degree in Education (School Management) from India’s Regional Institute of Education and has served as a manager in various departments at Aasandha Company.
The five-member commission is currently composed of Adam Shamil as President, alongside members Shiyama Mohamed, Shazna Hashim, Ahmed Nashid, and Abdulla Nashid.
The appointments of the two most recent members follow the resignation of former Vice President Abdul Salam and member Thoha Mohamed, who stepped down in November ahead of no-confidence votes in Parliament.
Abdul Salam and Thoha Mohamed faced allegations of serious misconduct, including dismissing a corruption case against a former attorney general despite what was described as sufficient evidence for prosecution. They resigned on November 25, shortly before a scheduled vote on their removal.
On the same day, Parliament passed amendments to the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, granting the President the authority to appoint the commission’s President and Vice President. Previously, these positions were elected internally through a vote among commission members.
