The Maldives Police Service has towed 235 idle vehicles on Saturday, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and reduce traffic congestion in Malé and Hulhumalé.
In a post on X, the police reported that the towed vehicles included 201 motorcycles, 31 four-wheelers, and three bicycles.
According to the police, the operation aims to create a safer and more accessible environment for the public by addressing the issue of idle and illegally parked vehicles.
Recently, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has also collaborated with the police to remove abandoned vehicles from the streets of Hulhumalé.
This initiative follows the police’s announcement last year regarding stricter enforcement against vehicles parked illegally or obstructing public transport routes on major roads, including Ameenee Magu and Majeedhee Magu. In January 2025, authorities reported the destruction of 446 unclaimed vehicles.
To support this effort, the Government has designated a temporary parking lot for four-wheelers in front of the Hulumalé Cemetery Mosque. Of the allocated 90,000 square feet, 50,000 square feet are reserved for four-wheelers, including taxis, while 40,000 square feet have been designated for impounded vehicles awaiting registry and other necessary corrections.
