The Assistant General Manager of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Ahmed Haisham, has confirmed that the 'Taxi Line' service will be available for all destinations within Male', regardless of distance, introducing a guaranteed 24-hour taxi service through electric vehicles.
Speaking on MMTV's Bodu Khabaru programme, Haisham highlighted that finding a taxi for travel within Male' has become extremely difficult, with people often waiting for hours on the street without success. He emphasised that Taxi Line's primary advantage is its guarantee of service availability for all destinations, with no selective destination policy.
"The general public can be assured that trips won't be restricted to specific locations. We will provide service to any destination in Male', wherever passengers need to go. This trust and confidence in our service is the primary reason we are committed to providing it,” Haisham explained.
Department Manager Abdulla Farish Hussein revealed that the service has been designed to operate through a mobile application, with pre-booking features under consideration. The taxis will be equipped with safety measures, including CCTV systems, and will feature a lost-and-found tracking system.
Employment opportunities will be available for both full-time and part-time drivers, Haisham announced, with part-time positions requiring special training sessions. He also guaranteed fair compensation for all drivers.
Noting that the application is currently undergoing detailed development, Farish emphasised MTCC's commitment to delivering a comprehensive product that ensures user-friendly service for all citizens while maintaining environmental consciousness through the exclusive use of electric vehicles.
The project, recently awarded to MTCC by the Government, will be implemented in three phases. The first phase, launching this year, will cover Male', Hulhumale', and Velana International Airport. The service will expand to Villingili and Thilafushi in 2026-2027, followed by Rasmale', Giraavaru, Addu, Fuvahmulah, and Kulhudhuffushi in 2028-2029.
The agreement was signed between Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation’s Director General Ahmed Shameem and MTCC's Managing Director Ahmed Saudee, who highlighted the service's similarity to international ride-hailing platforms like Uber and Grab.
