The Labour Relations Authority has reminded employers to ensure the timely payment of the mandated fasting allowance ahead of the upcoming month of Ramadan.
The authority stated that non-compliance could result in formal complaints being filed against employers.
In a notification issued today, the authority reiterated that working Maldivians are entitled to receive a fasting allowance of MVR 3,000 before the start of Ramadan, as stipulated by the Employment Act. This legal requirement applies to all employees, including those in private enterprises, as well as temporary staff, employees on probation, and those on legally provided leave.
The authority noted that while some employers do provide the allowance, they have not always disbursed it before Ramadan, as required by law. Similar complaints regarding the non-payment or delayed payment of the fasting allowance have been received in previous years.
To address ongoing concerns, the Labour Relations Authority has now opened the option for local employees to formally file complaints if they do not receive the allowance at the start of Ramadan.
Employers are urged to comply with the legal mandate to avoid potential action, as the authority continues to monitor adherence to the regulations surrounding the fasting allowance.
