The Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla has responded to public criticism that Members of Parliament are not fulfilling their responsibilities due to shorter and less frequent sittings.

In his concluding remarks at Wednesday’s session, the Speaker emphasised that the core work of the legislature takes place within its various committees. He noted that the presence or absence of MPs in the main chamber should not be interpreted as a reflection of their overall productivity.

As part of ongoing legislative efforts, Parliamentary Committees are currently reviewing several key proposals. With the first session of the year set to conclude on May 5, priority is being given to completing committee assignments.

These include finalising a number of draft laws that are considered vital for addressing pressing public needs.
