President Dr Mohamed Muizzu held discussions on Thursday with key authorities to address concerns raised by advocates regarding individuals held in prolonged pre-trial detention.

The meeting, conducted at the President’s Office, centred on issues formally submitted by the advocates a day earlier. A significant portion of the discussion focused on the proposed implementation of an electronic monitoring system, designed to offer supervised release options and a potential second chance for those facing extended detention before trial.

Present at the meeting were Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan, Attorney General Uz Ahmed Usham, and Prosecutor General, retired Justice Uz Abbas Shareef.

Earlier today, on the Rayyithunnaa Eku podcast, President Dr Muizzu described prolonged pre-trial detention as unacceptable and reaffirmed his commitment to reform. He highlighted short-term measures such as reviewing cases for supervised release and long-term plans including a new court complex and detention facility.

The President also pledged to reform the bail system to make it more accessible in cases involving minor offences.
