Tourism tax revenues see significant increase this year

The Ministry of Finance has reported a significant increase in the Government’s revenue from tourism-related taxes this year.
According to the Weekly Fiscal Development Report issued by the Ministry of Finance, Green Tax revenue increased by 73.7 per cent this year as of May 1.
During this period, revenue from Departure Tax increased by 31.9 per cent, and revenue from Tourism Goods and Services Tax (TGST) also reported an increase of 5.3 per cent.
Statistics revealed that the Government’s non-tax revenue increased by 32.3 per cent compared to last year, with 20.1 per cent accounted for by resort land rentals.
In addition, under the Government’s effort to reduce spending, operational costs have declined by 8.6 per cent and transportational costs reduced by 21.8 per cent, with the total recurrent expenditure reduced by 3.3 per cent.
As of May 1, 2025, 24.3 per cent of the total expenditure projected in this year’s budget has been incurred.
The Government has also reported a revenue of MVR 13.5 billion as of May 1, with total expenditure amounting to MVR 12 billion.
