Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib has stated that the redevelopment of Addu City’s link road is the most important project the Government is undertaking in the region.

He made the statement during Monday’s sitting of Parliament in response to a question by Maradhoo MP Ahmed Didi regarding the scope and progress of the project.

Minister Dr Muththalib said the Road Development Corporation (RDC) has been awarded the contract for the redevelopment of the link road, which includes approximately 60 kilometres of concrete-treated base (CTB) roads originally built by Afcons, an Indian contractor, under the previous administration.

The project, valued at MVR 829 million, will also involve the development of additional roads across Addu City. The Minister noted that an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is currently in progress and will guide the implementation phase.

According to the Minister, the implementation plan prioritises the Link Road component, including extension of the road near Hithadhoo Protected Area.

He also confirmed that discussions have been held between the Addu City Council and RDC, and that a designated site for the project is being prepared for the Ministry.

The Addu Link Road connects the islands of Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Feydhoo, and Gan. It is the second-longest paved causeway in the Maldives.
