The Maldives Media Council has condemned threats and insults directed at individual journalists and media outlets on both political platforms and social media.
In a press statement, the Council reported receiving multiple complaints concerning such threats, noting that they were targeted at journalists and media entities across various public forums.
The Council strongly denounced gender-based attacks and expressed concern that disparaging the press often described as the fourth pillar of democracy by individuals in positions of responsibility could contribute to a decline in the Maldives’ ranking on the Press Freedom Index.
Consequently, the Council urged all parties to exercise their right to freedom of expression with responsibility and respect for democratic values.
The statement further highlighted that unregistered media outlets have been disseminating content, including news, images, videos, and rally coverage, which violates basic ethical standards. The Council noted that such content can lead to the re-victimisation of vulnerable groups, including individuals with special needs and those affected by violence.
In addition, the Council observed discriminatory practices in how information is shared with different journalists and media organisations. It called on relevant authorities to refrain from such conduct and ensure equal access to information.
The Council concluded by urging all individuals and institutions to avoid activities that undermine press freedom and the rights of the public.
