33 mental health professionals in the Malé region have completed a five-day Mental Health Gap training programme aimed at improving mental health service delivery.

Held from May 11 to 15 in Hulhumalé, the training was conducted by the National Mental Health Department under the Ministry of Health, in partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF Maldives, and IGMH’s National Centre for Mental Health.

31 participants completed the full programme, which focused on strengthening practical skills for identifying and managing mental health conditions, and integrating mental health support into primary care.

The sessions included discussions on national mental health policies, service improvements, and strategies to address sector challenges.

According to the Ministry of Health, the training is part of broader efforts to expand access to mental health services across the country.

The National Mental Health Department, now functioning as an independent entity, recently launched additional initiatives, including a refresher course for helpline staff and the publication of 'Caring Friends,' a parenting resource book.
