12 applications submitted for Supreme Court Judge post

Twelve candidates have applied for the vacant position of Supreme Court Judge, according to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). 

Following the removal of Supreme Court Justices Dr Azmiralda Zahir and Mahaz Ali Zahir due to judicial misconduct, JSC announced a vacancy for the position until May 22.

Twelve candidates applied for the vacant Supreme Court judge position before the deadline, including current and former judges and lawyers. 

The twelve applicants are:

  • Mohamed Faisal
  • Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim
  • Ibrahim Ali
  • Mohamed Ibrahim
  • Abdullah Hameed
  • Abdul Ghanee Mohamed
  • Sujau Usman
  • Mohamed Saleem
  • Ahmed Hailam
  • Mohamed Raghib Ahmed
  • Aishath Fazna Ahmed
  • Maryam Nihaayath

The Supreme Court bench comprises the Chief Justice and six judges.

Under the Judiciary Act, Supreme Court judges are appointed in consultation with the JSC, following nomination by the President and approval by a majority of members present and voting in Parliament
