The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued a public advisory calling for increased vigilance as cases of COVID-19, dengue fever, and seasonal influenza continue to rise across the Maldives.

In a statement released to the media, the HPA noted a significant uptick in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks. This resurgence comes as part of a pattern of seasonal illnesses typically observed during this time of year.

Alongside the rise in COVID-19 cases, the HPA also reported an increase in incidences of dengue fever, viral fevers, and influenza. The agency stressed the importance of taking preventive measures, including practising good hygiene, using mosquito repellents, and seeking medical advice if symptoms develop.

The COVID-19 pandemic first emerged in the Maldives in early 2020, following its initial outbreak in Wuhan, China. The virus rapidly spread across the globe, prompting widespread lockdowns and travel restrictions. In the Maldives, the outbreak had a profound impact, claiming the lives of hundreds and straining healthcare resources.

Globally, the pandemic has resulted in the deaths of more than seven million people, according to international health authorities.
