The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has formally launched plans to relocate its central headquarters from the capital, Malé, to Hulhumalé.

A formal agreement to facilitate the construction of the new headquarters was signed yesterday between the Maldives Police Service and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC). The signing ceremony took place at HDC, with Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen representing the MPS and HDC Managing Director Mauroof Jameel signing on behalf of the corporation.

Currently, the Shaheed Hussain Adam Building in Malé serves as the main police headquarters. Originally inaugurated in 1999, the building was previously shared by both the military and the police. Following the structural separation of the two forces, the premises were dedicated solely to police operations. The Maldives Police Service began functioning as an independent entity on September 1, 1999.

In addition to the new central facility in Hulhumalé, the Government has launched an extensive project to build police stations, posts, and accommodation blocks in island communities. Agreements have already been signed with various contractors for the development of police facilities in 83 islands.

In his 2025 Presidential Address to the People’s Majlis, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu spoke of the Government’s goal of establishing police services on every inhabited island by the end of the year.
