Influenza and COVID-19 cases surge: HPA

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) of has reported a significant rise in the number of influenza and COVID-19 cases across the country.
The data, published for the period from April 6 to May 17, also highlights a notable increase in cold cases.
According to the HPA, cases of asthma cases have surged significantly throughout all regions of the Maldives during the reporting period, indicating a broader trend of respiratory-related health issues.
In addition to respiratory illnesses, mosquito-borne diseases remain a concern. The agency recorded 86 cases of dengue fever during the specified timeframe—a marked decrease compared to the 675 cases reported in the same period last year. Despite the lower figures, authorities warn that the onset of rainfall could lead to a resurgence in mosquito-borne illnesses.
The highest number of dengue cases this year were recorded in Raa Atoll, Kaafu Atoll, and Alif Alif Atoll.
According to HPA, 254 cases of influenza have been reported in within the 23 days. Also, 37 people have tested positive for Covid. The highest number of cases of influenza and COVID-19 have been reported in the Maléarea.

Given these developments, HPA has issued a public advisory urging citizens to take precautionary measures, especially as seasonal changes and rainfall may contribute to further increases in disease transmission.
