Ministry of Defence takes charge of National Service Programme

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has designated the Ministry of Defence as the executive authority for the Maldives National Service, under the powers granted by Article 116(a) of the Constitution.

The announcement was made in an official notice (No. 2025/8) issued by the President’s Office on Thursday.

With this announcement, the Ministry of Defence has officially been entrusted with duties related to the Maldives National Service, effective immediately.

For the execution of the Maldives National Service, the Ministry of Defence has been tasked with the following responsibilities:

  • Formulating and implementing rules governing the Maldives National Service
  • Planning and organizing all matters related to the enrollment of individuals into the National Service
  • Registering individuals enrolled in the National Service
  • Managing administrative affairs concerning members of the Maldives National Service
  • Developing and implementing the Maldives National Service training system
  • Monitoring the progress of training under the National Service training system
  • Collaborating with relevant institutions to enhance and develop the National Service framework

An additional ten specific responsibilities have been formally incorporated into the Ministry of Defence’s mandate for the Maldives National Service.

The National Service Programme is a flagship initiative of the President, aimed at building a strong and capable youth generation through structured training and education, in line with a key policy of the Government.
