President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Attorney General’s Office Bill, passed by Parliament during its 32nd sitting of the first session on May 15, 2025.
The Attorney General’s Office Bill, proposed on behalf of the Government by South Maafannu MP Abdulla Rifau (Bochey), aims to resolve longstanding challenges related to recruiting professional staff and implementing salary revisions within the Attorney General’s Office under the Civil Service framework. With its passage, the Office will now operate independently of the Civil Service structure, representing a significant milestone in the Government’s legislative reform efforts.
With the ratification, a new legislative framework has been established to govern the operations and responsibilities of the Attorney General’s Office. The Attorney General’s Office Act was subsequently published in the Government Gazette on Thursday and is set to come into force 90 days from the date of its publication.
Under the new law, staff at the Attorney General’s Office will be categorized into two main groups, which are Legal Service and Administrative Service.
Legal Service staff will include professionals appointed to perform legal duties and responsibilities. And Administrative Service staff will consist of individuals supporting the Legal Department in administrative roles, as well as personnel handling general management and support functions within the office.
