The Maldivian health sector is set for significant advancements in 2025 and 2026, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced in Episode 7 of the Rayyithunaa Eku podcast. He reaffirmed that strengthening nationwide healthcare remains a top priority for his Administration.
President Dr Muizzu highlighted key developments in Malé City, including the swift relocation of the Maldivian Blood Services and Thalassaemia Centre to the Orange Hiya building, completed within a month by the Maldives National Defence Force. The upgraded facility now offers expanded services, increased capacity, and improved staffing.
On 25 May, the President inaugurated a modern emergency unit at Hulhumalé Hospital and a 75-bed Multi-Specialty Surgical Wing at IGMH, enhancing emergency and specialist care as Hulhumalé’s population grows.
He also announced the integration of five major facilities under the Malé Group of Hospitals to streamline service delivery through a unified management system.
Underscoring the Government’s focus on preventive care, President Dr Muizzu cited the generational tobacco ban and Tobacco Control Act as major milestones, with tobacco tax revenue now redirected towards public health initiatives. He noted the World Health Organization's recognition of these efforts as a proud achievement for the nation.
