Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has called on all countries to submit updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) ahead of COP30, urging greater ambition, transparency, and urgency in global climate action.
VP Hussain Mohamed Latheef made the call while delivering his address at the High-Level International Conference on the Preservation of Glaciers, held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
During the address, he underscored the Maldives’ profound concern over the accelerating loss of glaciers and their far-reaching consequences.
The Vice President noted that the Maldives has submitted its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) this year, charting an ambitious course toward resilience and low-carbon development. He reaffirmed the country’s commitment to reducing emissions by 1.52 million tonnes by 2035 and generating 33 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2028, targets achievable with international support.
With this, the Vice President urged all countries to submit updated NDCs ahead of COP30, stressing the need for greater ambition, transparency, and urgency. He emphasised that global climate commitments must be genuinely transformative, not merely symbolic, if the climate crisis is to be effectively addressed.
He also highlighted the urgent need for targeted international support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), advocating for tailored strategies, concessional climate finance, appropriate technologies, and robust capacity-building efforts to effectively address their unique vulnerabilities.
Concluding his remarks, the Vice President reaffirmed the Maldives’ unwavering commitment to working in close collaboration with the international community to tackle the global threat of glacier loss. He underscored the need for enhanced cooperation and solidarity to address the pressing challenges posed by melting ice and rising sea levels.
