Domestic electricity tariff rates in the Maldives will be reduced starting June 1, 2025.
The decision was confirmed on Friday night through a post on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s official X account. He stated that he has instructed the relevant authorities to implement the tariff reduction in a sustainable manner and outlined a proposal for doing so.
Under the new rates, households using 100 units will pay MVR 1.25 per unit, down from MVR 1.50 while those consuming 200-300 units will see rates drop from MVR 2.15 to MVR 1.70. The 400-500 unit tier sees the largest reduction, dropping from MVR 2.95 to MVR 2.66 per unit.
Easing the financial burden of electricity services on the general public remains a key pledge of President Dr Muizzu. It was one of the most prominent concerns raised by citizens during his presidential campaign. President Dr Muizzu has repeatedly assured the public that his Administration is committed to addressing these concerns and delivering tangible solutions during his term in office.
This latest move follows a pattern of recent Government measures aimed at reducing the financial strain on households. During Ramadan, partial exemptions and discounts were applied to domestic electricity bills. In addition, the Government waived penalties accrued from unpaid electricity and water bills in the domestic category.
Further relief was also granted in April 2025 to help households cope with rising electricity consumption driven by unusually hot weather.
