The Maldives Correctional Service has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Addu City Council to implement alternative punitive measures for prisoners, except imprisonment.
The MoU was signed during a ceremony held on Thursday by Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer on behalf of the Maldives Correctional Service, and by Mayor Ali Nizar on behalf of the Addu City Council.
The Maldives Correctional Service stated that the agreement involves seeking support from the Addu City Council to implement non-custodial sentences, as outlined in the relevant regulations.
The agreement outlines provisions for enrolling convicts in educational and rehabilitation programmes, including those conducted by the Addu City Council or affiliated government institutions.
It also mandates the Council to explore opportunities for convict participation in community service through relevant organisations.
Addu City Council will also support the Maldives Correctional Service's efforts to rehabilitate and reintegrate convicts into society.
