The Ministry of Defence has announced that the Maldives is set to receive a Guardian-class Patrol Boat from Australia, in a significant step forward in defence cooperation between the two nations and a major boost to maritime security in the Indian Ocean.
The announcement was jointly made by Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, Richard Marles MP, and Maldivian Minister of Defence, Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon. Both sides described the initiative as a reflection of the deepening partnership between the Maldives and Australia, built on a shared commitment to regional peace, security, and stability.
The Guardian-class Patrol Boat, currently under construction in Australia and scheduled for delivery in 2026, is expected to enhance the Maldives’ ability to monitor and safeguard its vast Exclusive Economic Zone. According to the Ministry, the vessel will play a crucial role in deterring and responding to illegal maritime activities, including unauthorised fishing and smuggling.
Alongside the vessel, Australia will also provide the Maldives with a multi-beam echo sounder. The Ministry noted that the hydrographic equipment will strengthen national capacity to map the ocean floor, promoting safer navigation and unlocking opportunities for sustainable economic development.
The Ministry confirmed that technical work is already underway with Australian counterparts to establish a comprehensive maintenance and sustainment plan.
Following the announcement, Minister Ghassan expressed his appreciation via his official X account, thanking President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for his continued efforts to enhance national defence and security capabilities.
