The Maldives Police Service has destroyed a large number of unclaimed vehicles as part of ongoing efforts to ease traffic congestion and enforce parking regulations in Greater Malé Region.
In a statement shared via X on Monday, police confirmed that 568 vehicles were destroyed on May 31. Among them were 524 two-wheelers and 44 four-wheelers.
The vehicles were previously towed by police after being left unused for extended periods or parked irregularly in public areas. Police stated that such operations are part of routine enforcement to remove abandoned or illegally parked vehicles that contribute to traffic congestion in the capital.
Authorities noted that all destroyed vehicles had remained unclaimed despite owners being given a specified grace period to retrieve them.
This latest initiative follows an announcement made last year by the Maldives Police Service to tighten enforcement against vehicles obstructing major roads, including Ameenee Magu and Majeedhee Magu, particularly those interfering with public transport routes and pedestrian access.
