Theft tops crime reports in May with over 300 cases

Statistics from the Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that over 300 theft cases were reported in May alone.

According to the statistics, theft was the most reported crime in May, with a total of 327 cases recorded. Road accidents followed closely behind, with 269 cases reported during the same period.

MPS recorded 20 cases of burglary, 55 cases of assault, 178 drug-related cases, 21 cases of fraud, 48 cases of property damage, and four cases of counterfeiting and forgery in May. Police also recorded 25 cases of sexual assault and 16 cases of domestic violence in May.

Theft has been the most reported crime so far this year, with a total of 1,294 cases recorded, followed closely by 1,285 reported road accidents.

Cases related to drugs mark the third highest number of cases reported this year, with 753 cases. Closely trailing were the 102 cases of sexual assault and 101 cases of domestic violence. 

The Maldives Police Service continues to work diligently to ensure public safety, with increased police presence on roads, particularly during holidays, to support traffic management and prevent accidents.
