On the occasion of World Environment Day, the President of the Maldives emphasised the nation’s commitment to environmental protection as a fundamental responsibility crucial for both present and future prosperity and well-being.

The Maldives is globally recognised for its exceptional natural environment, which serves as a primary attraction for visitors. The country’s economy and the livelihoods of its people are closely linked to the health of its marine ecosystems and the beauty of its islands. This dependence highlights the importance of prioritising environmental conservation as a national imperative.

This year’s World Environment Day theme, ‘Beat Plastic Pollution,’ draws attention to the urgent need to address the harmful effects of plastic on the environment and human health. The global production of plastic exceeds 400 million tonnes annually, with approximately 19 to 23 million tonnes being dumped into oceans and rivers, causing significant pollution and ecological damage.

Given its geographical makeup, the Maldives is particularly vulnerable to environmental changes, especially the impacts of rising sea levels. These challenges have driven the country to actively participate in international efforts advocating for climate change mitigation and environmental protection.

Domestically, the Government has launched a major initiative to plant five million trees within five years, with over half a million trees already planted in various locations across the country. In addition, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism continues to implement measures to protect the nation’s natural habitats and wildlife.
