The second phase of the Raa Ungoofaaru road development project has been completed, significantly improving road conditions and accessibility on the island.
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which is overseeing the project, confirmed the completion this week. As part of this phase, a total of 8,626.55 square metres of asphalt road surface was developed, alongside the construction of 2,537.75 square metres of pedestrian pavements. Additional work included the installation of service lines, street signage, road markings, and a drainage system.
Ungoofaaru, with a population of approximately 2,500, serves as a key administrative and service hub in Raa Atoll. The island regularly receives visitors from neighbouring atolls seeking healthcare, government, and business services.
The road upgrades are expected to ease congestion, particularly during the wet season, and reduce flooding, a long-standing challenge on the island. The improvements also enhance road safety for both pedestrians and motorists while contributing to cleaner, more navigable streets.
This development follows the initial phase of the project, completed in 2021, which modernised the island’s primary access roads to essential public services.
