The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become the Maldives’ largest source of imports so far this year, according to recent data released by the Monetary Authority of Maldives (MMA).

As of April 2025, the total value of imports into the Maldives stood at USD 1.2 billion, marking a modest increase of 0.6 per cent compared to the same period last year. While overall import growth was limited, several countries recorded notable increases in their trade volumes with the Maldives.

Leading the surge, the UAE imported goods worth USD 325.5 million into the Maldives as of April, representing a significant 89.1 per cent rise from the USD 172.1 million recorded during the same period in 2024. The UAE had also been the Maldives’ largest importer last year and has now widened its lead.

India, which was the largest importer during the same period last year, also saw a year-on-year increase. Indian imports reached USD 210.2 million by April 2025, a 14.6 per cent rise from USD 183.5 million in April 2024. Despite the growth, the UAE’s import volume surpassed that of India this year.

Imports from China also showed an upward trend, increasing by 11.3 per cent from USD 154.6 million last year to USD 172 million this year. Similarly, imports from Malaysia grew by 20.1 per cent compared to the previous year.

According to the MMA, the increase in imports is an indication of economic strength, as it reflects sustained domestic demand and the public’s purchasing power. The data suggests that economic activity remains robust, supported by the continued flow of goods into the country.
