The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has forecast that unstable weather will persist across several regions of the country today, as the southwest monsoon continues to intensify.

In response to the evolving conditions, a white alert has been issued from Gaafu Alif Atoll to Addu City. The alert, in effect from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., warns of thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching up to 40 miles per hour.

Over the past 24 hours, the heaviest rainfall was recorded in Seenu Hithadhoo, which received 57.6 millimetres of rain—the highest in the country during this period.

According to the Met Office, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the next 24 hours, with the likelihood of thundershowers in some areas.

Wind speeds are forecast to range between 13 and 23 miles per hour across the western, north-western, northern, and central atolls. In the southern atolls, south-westerly to westerly winds are expected to blow at 10 to 20 miles per hour, with gusts potentially reaching 40 miles per hour in some locations.

Sea conditions are predicted to be particularly rough. The north-central sea is expected to range from rough to very rough, while the southern seas are likely to remain generally rough and overcast. Wave heights are forecast to vary between 4 and 7 feet.

The Met Office has attributed the ongoing spell of adverse weather to the active phase of the southwest monsoon.

Authorities have urged caution, especially for those at sea, and advised the public to remain alert due to the potential for further deterioration in weather conditions.
