Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has declared that the Maldives is dismantling the systems that enable drug trafficking, and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to bringing traffickers to justice.

His remarks followed a special operation by Maldives Customs on Tuesday, during which 18 kilogrammes of narcotics were seized. The drugs had arrived on a flight from Bengaluru, India, and were concealed inside plastic flower pots.

The Minister praised the dedication of Customs personnel, noting that their efforts are a vital part of the Government’s campaign to eliminate narcotics from the country. He said law enforcement efforts are intensifying as authorities work to disrupt trafficking networks.

He stated that individuals involved in the drug trade will be identified and prosecuted, and that those hiding illegal activities behind legitimate businesses will be exposed.

Significant progress has already been made, he added. Over the past 18 months, 700 kilogrammes of drugs have been seized, valued at MVR 1.4 billion. In the same period, more than 9,000 bottles of liquor have been confiscated.

Efforts are also underway to prevent smuggling via postal and air routes. A container scanner is being procured to improve detection of illegal maritime shipments.

The Minister’s remarks reflect the Government’s broader strategy to combat drug-related crime. As part of this effort, legislation is being strengthened, with proposed amendments to the Drugs Act enabling the confiscation of property and assets linked to trafficking. The expansion of rehabilitation centres is also ongoing, supporting a more comprehensive approach to substance abuse.
