The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has begun notifying individuals deemed ineligible for the 4,000 housing units under the Gedhoruveriya scheme.
According to the Ministry, notifications are being issued through the Gedhoruverin portal, with recipients also receiving confirmation via SMS. The Ministry has not, however, disclosed the total number of individuals deemed ineligible.
This comes in the wake of an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which earlier found that 2,180 individuals listed as flat recipients did not meet the scheme’s eligibility requirements. In response, the Government formed a special committee to conduct a comprehensive review of the list, initially published by the previous administration in November 2023.
Following this review, the Ministry reopened the process for public feedback, during which over 8,000 complaints were submitted. Reasons for disqualification include prior allocation of flats under previous Government or Government-owned company schemes, or ownership of private housing exceeding 600 square feet. Each notification includes a specific explanation for the decision.
The Ministry confirmed that those declared ineligible will be given the opportunity to appeal the decision through the designated complaints process. Meanwhile, the Government reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all eligible applicants who meet the official criteria and have no history of fraud or regulatory non-compliance will be allocated flats under the scheme.
