President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has proposed a cash reward scheme to encourage smokers to quit, directing ministers to assess its feasibility and present a detailed paper.
In a post on his official X account, President Dr Muizzu said he had instructed the relevant ministers to evaluate the proposal during a Cabinet meeting held earlier this week.
The initiative forms part of the Government’s broader agenda to promote healthier lifestyles and reduce the health risks associated with smoking.
The announcement comes as the President moves forward with plans for a generational smoking ban, backed by the full Cabinet. The decision follows public consultation and input from international health bodies, including the World Health Organization (WHO).
More than 5,500 individuals participated in a recent public opinion poll. Of the respondents, 51.1 per cent supported banning tobacco for those born on or after January 1, 2000. Meanwhile, 40.8 per cent backed a cut-off date of January 1, 2007, and 8.2 per cent favoured a ban for those born on or after January 1, 2004.
President Dr Muizzu has consistently reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to curbing tobacco use. The proposed generational ban would prohibit the purchase, sale, and use of tobacco products for those born on or after the selected date. Legal amendments will be required to enforce the measure, which the Government plans to submit to Parliament.
