An art exhibition celebrating World Whistleblowers’ Day was held on Monday and Tuesday at the National Art Gallery, highlighting the vital role of whistleblowers in promoting transparency and accountability.
The exhibition was officially opened by Enrico Boninsegna, Head of the Maldives Office of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). As part of the opening ceremony, the Whistleblower Protection Unit launched its new official logo, selected through a public design competition that received 70 submissions. The winning designer introduced the logo and its concept via a pre-recorded video message.
Twelve paintings, themed around whistleblowing, were displayed at the exhibition. The artworks were available for public viewing and purchase throughout the two-day event, which remained open until 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Whistleblower Protection Unit operates independently under the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives. Its mandate includes safeguarding whistleblowers in accordance with the Whistleblower Protection Act, forwarding complaints to relevant authorities, and conducting investigations into reports filed directly with the unit.
World Whistleblowers’ Day is observed globally on June 23 to honour those who expose misconduct and uphold integrity in workplaces and institutions.
