President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has declared Monday, July 28, 2025, a public holiday in connection with the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence.
Independence Day is officially observed on July 26. However, with a range of commemorative events planned across the weekend, the Government has designated July 28 as a public holiday to facilitate wider public participation. Key activities are scheduled for both July 27 and 28, prompting the extension.
This year marks six decades since the Maldives attained independence from British protection in 1965. In recognition of the milestone, an extensive programme of official and cultural events has been planned under the coordination of the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage.
Among the major activities are the national flag hoisting ceremony and the official State function, which will be held in two parts, an official ceremony and a national awards presentation. Several additional events will take place throughout the Independence Day period.
Public engagement activities include a short film festival organised in collaboration with the National Centre for the Arts, a national photography competition, and a parade featuring participation from Government agencies and corporations. Schools and youth organisations will also be involved in celebratory events such as a street march by school cadets, painting competitions, and essay writing contests.
To commemorate the 60th anniversary, the Ministry is in the process of finalising a special logo, selected from entries submitted through a public design competition.
