The Maldives has called on the international community to recommit to the core principles of the United Nations Charter, stressing the need for cooperation grounded in international law and multilateralism.

The statement was issued in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Charter’s signing. In a post on X, the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations said that respect for the Charter’s principles, including sovereign equality, territorial integrity, non-intervention and peaceful dispute resolution, is essential to addressing today’s global challenges.

The Maldives said the UN system remains central to maintaining peace, fostering development and advancing shared progress, particularly amid rising geopolitical tensions and threats to the rules-based international order.

The UN Charter was signed on June 26, 1945, in San Francisco by 50 nations and came into force on October 24 that year. It laid the foundation for post–World War II diplomacy and conflict resolution.

A UN member since 1965, the Maldives has consistently supported efforts to strengthen and reform the UN, particularly on climate change, sustainable development and the rights of small island developing states.

Today’s call for recommitment comes amid growing strains on multilateral cooperation, driven by geopolitical tensions and challenges to the rules-based international order.
