The Government has collected over MVR 900 million in green tax within the first 21 weeks of 2025, according to the Ministry of Finance and Planning.
Weekly statistics released by the Finance Ministry show that, as of June 12 this year, the Government has collected MVR 976.4 million in green tax, an 88 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.
During the same period last year, the Government collected MVR 518 million in green tax.
The green tax was introduced in October 2016 as a means to generate revenue for environmental protection efforts in the Maldives. It is levied on tourist resorts, hotels, guesthouses, and tourist vessels.
The green tax is charged at a rate of USD 12 per person per night for tourists staying at resorts, hotels, and liveaboards, and USD 6 per person per night for those staying in guesthouses. Children under the age of two are exempt from the tax. As a result, the total green tax revenue is directly linked to both the number of tourist arrivals and the duration of their stay in the Maldives.
