The Government has formally launched the National Migrant Health Policy, aimed at establishing a fair and inclusive health system that provides adequate healthcare for migrant workers. The initiative was introduced as part of the Administration’s broader efforts to ensure that all individuals residing and working in the country, regardless of their nationality, have access to essential health services.

Speaking at the policy’s inauguration, Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim underscored the vital contribution of migrant workers to national economic growth. He affirmed that it is the Government’s duty to uphold their rights, with particular emphasis on the right to health, which he characterised as a fundamental human entitlement. The Minister stated that the newly introduced policy is designed to embed this right within the national healthcare framework.

Building on this, the Minister described the policy’s implementation as a pivotal move towards constructing a more just and inclusive health system. However, he cautioned that policy development alone is insufficient to achieve meaningful change. He called upon all relevant government bodies, ministerial departments, and healthcare professionals to work in close coordination to realise the policy’s goals effectively.

Reinforcing his message, the Minister emphasised that protecting the health of migrant workers ultimately enhances the health security of the entire population. He noted that inclusive healthcare provisions strengthen the resilience and responsiveness of the national health system overall.

Statistical data released in 2024 by the Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skill Development highlights the significance of this initiative. Expatriates account for approximately 43 per cent of the national workforce, underlining the need for comprehensive and accessible health services for this substantial demographic.

In support of the policy, the Government has also introduced a dedicated support centre and an accompanying digital portal tailored to the needs of migrant workers. These platforms are intended to streamline access to healthcare and provide guidance in navigating the systemic challenges often faced by expatriate communities.
