President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on June 30, as part of his ongoing state visit to Singapore.
The visit coincides with the golden jubilee of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Singapore. Both leaders acknowledged the significance of the milestone and expressed commitment to enhancing ties between the two countries.
During the meeting, the President and Prime Minister discussed opportunities to expand economic cooperations including increasing fish exports from the Maldives to new markets, and attracting investment from Singaporean businesses into key sectors of the Maldivian economy.
Renewable energy was a key focus of the discussions, with President Dr Muizzu outlining the Maldives' target to generate 33 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2028. The two sides also discussed strengthening cooperation in education, including basic schooling and skills development. Technical collaboration in areas such as urban planning was also highlighted as a priority.
As small island states, both the Maldives and Singapore agreed on the importance of working together in multilateral forums to address shared challenges, especially the impacts of climate change. The leaders stressed the need for continued coordination on international platforms to amplify the concerns of vulnerable island nations.
Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Singapore were officially established on February 20, 1975.
