In a recent move to streamline Government operations and reduce expenses, the Maldives has cut 248 political positions as of October 31, 2024.
President's Office Chief Spokesperson Heena Waleed confirmed the reduction of political posts on her official X account on Friday.
This decision aligns with the Government’s broader economic reform agenda, aimed at improving efficiency and reducing costs across the board.
Alongside the workforce reduction, the Cabinet has announced plans to introduce a new performance-monitoring system for political workers. The mechanism, expected to be implemented soon, aims to enhance accountability and ensure high standards of performance among political appointees. This system will enable closer oversight of job responsibilities and productivity, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to efficient public service.
The reforms mark a significant step in the Maldives’ ongoing efforts to optimise Government spending while maintaining effective governance and service delivery.
