Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) is actively undertaking efforts to enhance operations at Malé North Harbour, one of the capital’s most heavily utilised logistical zones. The initiative is aimed at easing congestion, improving cargo handling efficiency, and strengthening service delivery for businesses and the public.

As part of the redevelopment plan, MPL is working to expand storage facilities and improve access to essential utilities such as water and fuel. North Harbour plays a central role in the loading and unloading of goods across the city, but the high volume of daily activity has resulted in severe congestion and operational delays.

To address these issues, MPL is relocating certain cargo-handling services to Thilafushi. This includes shifting the processing of containerised cargo intended for islands outside Malé. The move is expected to significantly reduce space constraints and create a more organised environment for vessel operations and goods distribution.

In addition, MPL is establishing designated zones for the distribution of goods to and from outer islands. These new centres are intended to streamline operations and improve the movement of supplies, which currently face delays due to limited space and inefficient vehicle turnover within the harbour area.

The ongoing improvements also follow the official transfer of a key section of the harbour area stretching from the MPL terminal to the local market near the fish market, granted to MPL on May 4 under an agreement with the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.

In preparation for the operational changes, MPL has instructed all vehicles operating within North Harbour to complete registration by August 1, 2025. From first September onwards, full compliance with new operational rules will be required for all users of the facility.
