NSPA spends MVR 4 million on disability therapies in June

According to the latest figures released by the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), MVR 4,055,281 was allocated in June for therapeutic treatment of people with disabilities across the Maldives.
The funding supported a range of interventions and benefited a total of 108 individuals. Of the recipients, 72 were male and 36 female. NSPA, in a statement shared via X, indicated that assistance was provided across seven categories of therapy.
The therapies supported and corresponding expenditures were as follows:
• Occupational therapy: MVR 1,222,776
• Behaviour therapy: MVR 1,106,650
• Speech therapy: MVR 1,022,420
• Educational therapy: MVR 603,925
• Psychotherapy: MVR 42,000
• Early intervention: MVR 37,400
• Physiotherapy: MVR 20,110
In addition to the financial data, NSPA also released updated statistics on disability registration in the country as of June 2020. The figures show that a total of 14,412 individuals had been registered under the disability category. Of these, 8,384 were male and 6,028 were female.
A significant portion of those registered were within the 18 to 64 age group. This demographic accounted for 7,351 individuals, comprising 3,788 males and 3,563 females.
The types of disabilities reported were categorised as follows:
• Physical disability: 4,117
• Multiple disabilities: 3,224
• Cognitive or intellectual impairment: 1,889
• Mental disability: 1,793
• Hearing and speech impairment: 1,745
• Visual impairment: 1,003
• Autism spectrum: 586
• Learning disabilities: 55
